SAFETY FIRST: WCCS moves forward on school officer

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of Trustees took the first step in moving forward in an agreement with the City of Columbia City for a school resource officer (SRO).At Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Pat O’Connor presented board members with a draft of a memo of understanding (MOU) between the district and city. The MOU is a necessary step in applying for a state grant to help fund the SRO, and must be approved by both the school board and Columbia City Common Council. The possible grant would provide 50 percent of the total cost of school safety upgrades — a $100,000 pricetag, including the SRO.O’Connor told the school board Monday that the district is also looking into purchasing additional safety equipment, such as cameras and monitoring devices in the schools.O’Connor has been working with law enforcement officers from the Indiana State Police, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Columbia City Police to determine the safety needs in each school. To read the rest of this story, see the Aug. 22 issue of The Post and Mail.
