DELAY IS OK: Professional development applauded by faculty

PIERCETON — Teachers and administration across Whitko Community School Corporation are reporting positive results from the extra time given each week for professional development.In January, the district instituted a delayed start time by a half an hour for staff development each Wednesday. The proposed idea came with some concern from one school board member, however, the majority voted to approve the change in the middle of the school year.Now, after almost three months of the revised schedule, some of Whitko’s principals shared the positive feedback received from faculty with school board members Monday night.“This has been a great use of time,” said Bruce Hansen principal at South Whitley Elementary School. “We are thankful for the time each week to spend together. I find that the majority of us wish we had more time each week, but it’s better than what we’ve had in the past.”At Whitko Middle School, the sentiment is much the same. “We are finding that the teachers appreciate the time to collaborate,” said Parrish Kruger, WMS principal. “We get together each week to make sure what we are doing aligns with our mission statement and goals.”Whitko High School Prinicpal David Parker was one of the administrators that cheered on the board’s decision to delay school. “I love it,” Parker said. “I lobbied a long time for something like this. Before it was as if we were trying to coach a team without getting to talk to the players, be on the sidelines or in the locker room at half time. Having this time each week is phenomenal. It’s a lot of work because we are challenging our teachers to put in some extra thought, but it’s good accountability and we are seeing a lot of areas that are improving.”To read the rest of this story, see the March 30 issue of The Post and Mail.
