Alta Acres, 81

Alta I. Acres, 81, a former resident of Columbia City, died at 2:17 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, in the North Woods Village in Kokomo.She was born near Albion March 3, 1931, a daughter of Orson and Gladys Smith Moore. Her formative years were spent in the Rome City community and she completed her education in the Rome City High School.On Feb. 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to Audes R. “Ace” Acres and they made their first home in DeKalb County, later in Stueben County and in 1955 moved to Noble County. Since 1960, they have made their home in the Columbia City area. In 1970, they purchased the Miller’s Gas for Less on South Line Street in Columbia City, which they operated as the Acres Bait & Tackle until 1989. Mr. Acres died May 12, 1997.Surviving relatives include a son, James A. (Martha) Acres of Columbia City; two daughters, Janet S. Irwin of Peru and Joyce A. Harris of Avilla; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Dietz of Helmer. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Orson and Herman Moore and two sisters, Edna Woodard and Lucille Butcher.The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with the Rev. Curtiss Johnson, officiating. The burial will be in the Nolt Cemetery, The visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.Memorials may be made to the Riley Hospital for Children or the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.Condolences may be sent to
