EAGLES FALL: CC drops final tune-up before sectional

FORT WAYNE — The Columbia City Eagles’ boys’ basketball team wrapped up the regular season portion of its schedule, traveling to Concordia Lutheran for a contest with the Cadets that they hoped would establish some momentum heading into next week’s sectional action, but inconsistent play on both ends of the court cost the Eagles as they fell to the Cadets 52-46 Friday night.

“In the end, all you can say is they got it done, and we didn’t,” said Eagle Head Coach Chris Benedict.

SWIMMING: Butterfly power stroke

Caden Ferguson swims the butterfly for Indian Springs Middle School’s boys swim team at South Side High School’s natatorium. Ferguson and the squad have competed in several events recently. Results were not available at press time but will be published in upcoming editions of The Post & Mail.

OUTSTANDING ATHLETES: Monk sisters garner track awards

CHURUBUSCO — In the same week that her sister, Heather, took home Saint Joseph’s College “Athlete of the Week,” 2014 Churubusco High School graduate Katie Monk was named Great Lakes Valley Conference “Field Athlete of the Week.”

Katie, a freshman at the University of Indianapolis, received the conference honor for her efforts in the shot put. Katie threw a season and career best 45-feet, 1/2-inch toss, taking fourth at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic. The mark is currently best among the Great Lakes Valley Conference athletes and ranks among the top 25 on the NCAA qualifying list.

LETTER OF INTENT: Peters signs with community college

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco High School senior Devin Peters signed a letter of intent to attend and play baseball for Kankakee Community College in Illinois.

Peters put up a .372 batting average in 2014 while playing in 29 games for the Eagles. Peters had an on-base percentage .426 and a slugging percentage of .442 with 15 runs batted in.
