SECTIONAL THRILLER: ’Busco baseball wins

BUTLER — A back-and-forth game between Churubusco and South Adams ended in with an Eagle victory Thursday evening.

Josh Howk crossed home plate off a sacrifice fly to give Churubusco an early 1-0 lead in the first inning at Eastside.

South Adams responded with a run of its own in the second, and neither team scored again until the Starfires scored in the fifth inning.

SECTIONAL FINAL: Whitko softball season ends

LAGRANGE — Whitko’s softball season came to an end in the finals of Thursday’s Lakeland IHSAA Sectional 21 with an 11-1 loss to Fairfield’s Lady Falcons.

Fairfield batted around, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning to put the Wildcats in a hole they were never able to climb from.

Col. City’s McFarland headed for state in 400-meter dash

SOUTH BEND ­— Columbia City’s Andrew McFarland participated at the boys Regional Track Meet at St. Joe High School in South Bend. McFarland qualified for the state finals track meet in Bloomington — twice in the same event.
McFarland ran in the 200-meter dash trials and qualified for the finals. McFarland then ran in the fast heat of the 400-meter dash and won with an unofficial time of 48.8, which would have set a new school record.

HEADED TO STATE: Col. City relay gets call back

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City‘s Lady Eagle 1,600-meter relay team received official word that it has qualified for the June 6 state finals track meet at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The team of Regan Decker, Molly Green, Elise Cormany and Hanna Wappes, along with alternates Samina Qureshi, Morgan von Seggern and Lauren Keller, got its “call back” qualification notice on Wednesday afternoon.

The team placed fourth at the Warsaw Regional in a time of 4:04.45. That time was good enough to seed them in the 21st spot in the 27-team field.
