CHURUBUSCO — With a 5-2 win in the season opener against Woodlan and another win over Oak Hill Thursday night, Churubusco’s baseball team is off to a 2-0 start to the season — an impressive feat as the team only had one practice on the field before the season opener.

As of March 10, Churubusco’s baseball field still had 14 inches of snow on it, forcing the Eagles to practice in the gymnasium and on the parking lot.

“We tried to give them all the game situations through practice,” said Churubusco Head Coach Mark Grove. “Experience is key.”

HUNTINGTON — Columbia City’s boys track team opened its season with a loss at Huntington North Thursday night.

Though the team didn’t open the season with a win, Head Coach Krystal Zoltek said she was happy to be on the track.

“It was nice to participate after the early cancellations and cold weather,” Zoltek said. “We are a young team and looking for great improvement as the season progresses.”

The Eagles missed their first two meets to weather — the county meet March 20 at Churubusco, and a dual with Wawasee March 24.

Hicks to play football at Wabash College

March 26, 2014

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s football team officially sent off another athlete to play at the next level.

Brient Hicks, a defensive stalwart for the Eagles, will continue his football career at Wabash College.

Hicks was part of a Churubusco team that won three conference titles during his career. In his senior year, he was one of the leading Eagle defensive players. He had 9.5 tackles-for-loss and more than 50 solo or assisted tackles throughout the year.

His contributions on the defensive side of the ball were noted by Churubusco Football Head Coach Paul Sade.
