SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team returns a solid core of players and will be taking on some of the best competition in the state.
The Wildcats are in the same Class 3A sectional as Bellmont, which went to the semistate game a year ago. In the Three Rivers Conference, Northfield was the Class 2A state champion from last year.
“We’re not the favorite on paper,” said Whitko coach Erik Hisner. “But we like what we see and are setting some goals going forward.”
Whitko finished last year with a 20-9 overall record and was 4-3 in the conference. The Wildcats had their season end in the opening round of sectionals, falling to Norwell.
Whitko should be strong on the mound. The Wildcats return three of their top four starters from a year ago. Alex Stoddard, Ethan Nicodemus and Wyatt Wolf all return and are expected to anchor the rotation. Ryan Weigold is also back for 2013 and is expected to lead the bullpen as closer. Overall, the squad graduated five starters.
“We have some guys who are going to step in (new),” Hisner said. “We also have some part-time starters (from last year) who will step in.”
In the line-up, Hisner will have several .300-plus hitters returning.
