DENVER — A three-headed scoring effort keyed Whitko’s boys basketball team to a Three Rivers Conference victory Friday.
The Wildcats defeated North Miami on the road by a final score of 45-41. It was the second consecutive league win for Whitko.
The Wildcats were lifted by a 43-point effort from three of its players. Senior Gabe Powell led the way with 18 points on a 58 percent shooting effort. Stephen Bennett was also over 50 percent from the floor on his way to 13 points, and Dylan Cumberland paced the team at the charity stripe — knocking down nine free throws and the Wildcats’ lone 3-pointer to end up with 12. Alex Stoddard scored two.
Bennett also keyed the Wildcat effort with 13 rebounds and Powell had nine boards. Cumberland led the squad in assists with five.
Whitko jumped out to a 24-16 halftime lead and increased the margin to double-digits at 32-22 after three periods. North Miami was able to close the gap, but Whitko held on in the fourth to bring the game to its final score.
The win lifts the Wildcats to a record of 4-12. North Miami is now 1-15. Conference-wise, Whitko is 2-4 and North Miami is 0-6.
Whitko is turning into a squad of road warriors, having defeated Wabash in a thriller, 74-72. The team closes the league slate with a game this Saturday at home against Rochester at 2:30 p.m.
