CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s girls basketball team lost to the Central Noble Lady Cougars earlier in January in the Northeast Corner Conference tournament. The Lady Eagles lost that game at home, 39-36.
‘Busco had a second chance at the 2-16 Lady Cougars Saturday, on the Lady Eagles’ senior night.
’Busco trailed by one with 20 seconds in the ball game, but were unable to connect with the basket in the time remaining, and lost 34-30.
With the score 31-30 in favor of Central Noble and 30 seconds left on the clock, the Lady Cougars were called for traveling after Lady Eagle sophomore Cassidy Perlich attempted to steal the ball. ‘Busco head coach Jamie Perlich called a timeout with 20 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
Following the timeout, the Lady Eagles inbounded the ball under Central Noble’s basket. A last-ditch effort by ’Busco fell short, and the Lady Cougars came up with the rebound, forcing ‘Busco to foul.
Central Noble’s Kennedy Forker hit both of her double-bonus free throws, widening the margin to three at 33-30.
With 18 seconds remaining in the game, the Lady Eagles wouldn’t get an opportunity to tie the score, as a ’Busco turnover returned the possession to Central Noble.
Tiffany Simcox, the Lady Cougars’ leading scorer of the night, was fouled shooting with five seconds on the clock. She hit one of her two free throws to put the game out of reach for the Lady Eagles, 34-30.
After the game, coach Perlich said the play he drew up during the timeout in the last minute the fourth quarter didn’t completely come to fruition.
‘Busco falls to 3-16 on the season, with a 2-7 record against NECC opponents.
The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Montana Martin with 10 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. She went 5-for-7 in free throws.
‘Busco will get one more shot at win number four, as the Lady Eagles play their last game of the 2012-2013 regular season at Lakeland Friday at 6 p.m. in a NECC tilt with the Lady Lakers.
