A lot of the time high school athletes are praised solely on what they do with a jersey on.
Earlier this week, two Columbia City Lady Eagles basketball players were recognized among the state’s best for both their averages on the court and in the classroom.
Seniors Maddie Hinen and Corinna Raypole were selected by the IBCA (Indiana Basketball Coaches Association) as IBCA Academic All-State Honorable Mention members for the 2010-2011 season.
IBCA-member head coaches from high schools across the state nominated seniors who met specific criteria, which included a 3.5 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale), a rank in the top 25 percent of one’s class and a SAT score of 1,500 or ACT score of 23.
All nominees also had to be starting players in at least 90 percent of their team’s games.
Hinen led the Lady Eagles from the free throw line shooting 85 percent for the season.
Hinen also averaged over three rebounds a game, two assists and two steals.
Raypole was a force in the paint for the Lady Eagles this season averaging 10 points per game, as well as five rebounds.
Columbia City finished with a record of 12-10 this season and a first-round sectional win over Whitko.
Hinen and Raypole will be presented with their certificates in May at the CCHS Honors Convocation.
