Doris E. Simmons, 76, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at her Goose Lake home. She was born on January 31, 1938, in Lodi, Ohio and was the daughter of Elmer K. and Cleo E. (Hite) Brown.
She spent her childhood in Lodi, Ohio before moving to Fort Wayne and finally settling in Columbia City, most recently at Goose Lake. She attended Central High School. She married James A. Simmons Aug. 30, 1968, in Columbia City.
She was a homemaker for most of her life but was employed by Kroger’s in the Deli for 10 years before retiring in 2004.
She was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 1906 in Columbia City. Her hobby was playing bingo and lots of it.
She is survived by son, James (Sandy) Simmons of Harrisburg, Pa., Dennis D. (Toni) Simmons, Fort Wayne, Daniel Simmons of Monroe, Mich., Bob Ewing of Columbia City; daughters, Tamera S. Simmons of Columbia City, Lisa Simmons of Churubusco, Diana Simmons of Columbia City; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonnie Hill of Lodi, Ohio and her beloved dog Mindy.
Preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James A. Simmons who passed away Jan. 14, 2013, and two children, Rebecca Buckles and Michael Simmons.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pastor Michael D. Dillon will be officiating. Burial will follow in the South Whitley Cemetery, South Whitley.
