DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE: Buchanan joins mayor’s race

COLUMBIA CITY — Dick Buchanan has officially declared his intention to run on the Democratic ticket for the office of Mayor of Columbia City in the upcoming May primary.

He and his wife Jean raised their daughter, Christy Fulk, an elementary teacher residing in South Whitley, and Phillip Buchanan, a clinical pharmacist in Nashville, Tenn., in Columbia City.

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD: Whitko fosters ‘real world’ success

SOUTH WHITLEY — Success breeds Success. That is the hope of the Whitko High School administrators as they kicked off a series of events arranged to expose students to the “real world.”

With the intent of introducing students to some of Whitko’s more successful graduates, four former WHS students and members of the recently formed Successful Whitko Alumni Speakers Bureau came to the school Wednesday morning to share their post-Whitko experiences with current juniors and seniors.

GUILTY: Huffman pleads guilty to molesting

COLUMBIA CITY — Two men accused of child sex crimes were seen in Whitley County Circuit Court this month.

Jay Huffman, 58, of Columbia City, pleaded guilty to two counts of child molesting. William Greenwood, 40, of Pierceton, was arrested Jan. 15 for sexual misconduct with a minor, child molesting and child seduction.

Huffman was arrested in October on allegations that he had engaged in sexual activity with two girls in his family, 11 years old and younger.

CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN: Col. City man faces 23 child crime felonies

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man is facing 23 felony charges for crimes against children.

Following a month-long investigation, Charles Larson, 45, of Columbia City, was taken into custody Friday afternoon after detectives looked into various allegations of child sex crimes.

Investigators with the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police’s Cyber Crime Information Technology Section uncovered a substantial cache of child pornography during the execution of a search warrant at Larson’s home in Columbia City.

SCHOOL FLAP: School board member may have violated law

Indiana's public access counselor says an eastern Indiana school board member may have violated the state's open door law when she suspended the district's superintendent.

Christa Ellis, the president of Union School Corp.'s school board, suspended Superintendent Fred Herron on Monday, a day before she and two fellow board members voted to place Herron on paid administrative leave. The board's two other members, who were surprised by the move, abruptly resigned during the meeting.

"I don't want to be part of this train wreck," board member Alan McCormick said in resigning.

FREE MAMMOGRAMS: Valentines are for Life

COLUMBIA CITY — The public can honor a special person in life by purchasing a “Valentine for Life” from the Whitley County Giving Circle for Women’s health,
The tax-deductible donation will help to provide free mammograms for local women who cannot afford one and would not otherwise receive this critical cancer screening. A Valentine costs $5 with all proceeds to benefit the free mammogram program ran in partnership with Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Deadline for Valentine submission is Saturday, Feb. 7.

WINTER: Bringing dangers for the elderly

COLUMBIA CITY — Winter is here, and with the first icy blasts of sub-zero temperatures, ice and snow comes a set of problems that for most of us are simply annoying. For the elderly these conditions may present serious issues.
The freezing temperatures and sub-zero windchill reading present a very real possibility of frostbite and hypothermia for the elderly.

Because of decreased circulation and generally lower fat content, some of the elderly may have a tendency to “feel cold” most of the time.

PART-TIME OFFICER: ’Busco council adds SRO

CHURUBUSCO – Chad Fulkerson, Churubusco police officer and 19-year law enforcement veteran, was officially named Smith-Green Community School’s full-time school resource officer (SRO) Wednesday evening during Churbusco’s Town Council meeting.

“He’s been a part of the town’s police force for a long time,” said Churubusco Town Marshal Mike Engle, “and he’s a great guy.”
Having been previously employed as a part-time SRO at Smith-Green, Fulkerson will continue his position for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year.

BOSTON'S GOT TALENT: Columbia City musician to try out for national television show

COLUMBIA CITY — Trent Boston will be singing the blues this weekend — but not in a figurative sense.
The Columbia City musician will be auditioning for “America’s Got Talent,” a NBC television show that will be entering its 10th season this year.

Auditions are held in Chicago. While anyone can try out for the show, Boston received a special front-of-the-line pass from a local radio station, giving him a special advantage.

COLUMBIA CITY — The first Democrat has stepped into the ring of this year’s municipal election season.
“Richard” Dick Buchanan is set to take on incumbent Ryan Daniel (R) for the mayor’s seat. Buchanan is the lone Democrat in this year’s election so far.

Eight candidates have filed for the primary so far — four incumbents and four new face.

An open invitation has been issued to Whitley County residents to photograph their winter life during Super Bowl Weekend, Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1.

TRAFFIC UPDATE: Head On Crash on I-69 at 296 Mile Marker Has Interstate Closed

(Allen County, IN)-A head on crash with injuries on southbound I-69 at the 296 mile marker, in front of the GM plant, has the interstate closed at that location.

Traffic is being diverted onto Lafayette Center Road.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.
