EXTREME MAKEOVER: Churubusco awarded $400K grant

CHURUBUSCO — Churubusco’s downtown will receive a makeover thanks to a $400,000 grant awarded to the town.

The $400,000 grant will be used to revitalize the area from Washington Street to 123 S. Main St.

Friday night’s game ball was brought to the field by special delivery at the Columbia City-Warsaw game.

Marking the one-year anniversary of the massive head injury Columbia City graduate Samuel Dailey received, Dailey, now recovered, delivered the game ball by medical helicopter.

Columbia City beat Warsaw for the first time since 2011, 33-21. For more coverage of high school football, see Page A12.

OIL SPILL: Fuel leak coats parking lot, Hoosier Dr.

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s HAZMAT team was called to the McDonald’s parking lot in Columbia City after a diesel fuel leak was spotted in the semi-truck lot.

STATE FAIR: Results tout Whitley County 4-Hers

WHITLEY COUNTY — Whitley County 4-Hers recently returned from the Indiana State Fair (ISF) with many ribbons and accolades to show for their efforts. The results are from the state fair, and are according to ISF officials.

CAUCUS DATE FOR AUDITOR SPOT: To convene Sept. 3 to decide by Dec. 31

COLUMBIA CITY — Republican Party Chairman Matt Boyd announced that a caucus date has been set to decide who will fill the Whitley County Auditor post until Dec. 31. The caucus will convene Sept. 3 although a designated place and time has not been announced.

FUTURE OF VEHICLE TRAFFIC: $30M project proposed in Whitley Co.

WHITLEY COUNTY — With the proposal of a full-service truck stop planned for the northwest corner of U.S. 30 and East County Line Road, Whitley County officials are looking at the future of vehicle traffic on the county line (County Road 800 East). According to conducted studies, approximately 1,600-1,700 semi-trucks travel East County Line Road between U.S. 24 and U.S. 30 a day.

HEUER RESIGNS: Executive director becomes new role

WHITLEY COUNTY — State Rep. Kathy Heuer resigned her state seat effective Wednesday, after losing the office in the primary election to Christopher Judy. “It’s truly been an honor and pleasure to serve these past four years,” said Heuer. “I am looking forward to this new endeavor and anxious to begin a new path.”

HEAVY RAINS: Thunderstorms continue

(Aug. 22, 2014) -- Thunderstorms which are building throughout the area this morning will bring heavy rainfall of 2 to 3″ before 8 a.m. There is a Flash Flood Warning out for most of the area.

After the rain ends the heat and humidity turn on making this one of the most uncomfortable weekends of the year and temperatures closing in on 90 through early next week.

This hot weather does not look it will break until late in the week next week. Heat indexes will be around 100 all weekend long with dew points in the 70s and widely scattered storms.

FLASH FLOOD WARNING: County under advisory

WHITLEY COUNTY (Aug. 22, 2014) -- A Flash Flood Warning Remains In Effect Until 8:15 a.m. for Whitley County.

At 5:26 a.m. National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain.

Two to four inches of rain fell in a two hour period this morning.

Drivers are urged to not drive vehicles into areas where water covers the road.
