Wildcats top Carroll; Irwin approaching 2,000

February 1, 2012

SOUTH WHITLEY — Both the Whitko Wildcats and Carroll Chargers came into their match-up Tuesday having lost eight games for the season; neither looking for its ninth. Whitko got its wish, sending Carroll back home with a 53-48 loss.

In the first quarter, Logan Irwin scored a basket early and later displayed his range by hitting a 3-pointer. The sharp shooter is just 12 points away from reaching 2,000 career points and is expected to hit the mark Friday.

Irwin, along with Trey Weber who also connected from 20 feet, accounted for eight of the team’s 10 first quarter points.

After Whitko outscored Carroll in the first, the Chargers returned the favor to the Wildcats in the second quarter.

Weber continued scoring 3-pointers, recording two in the second, part of his four treys overall. He was second in scoring for the Wildcats with 12 points.

The teams went into the break with Whitko leading 18-15.

In the third period, both teams put on a clinic from beyond the arc.
Logan Irwin, Keaton Irwin, Jordan Sims Colin Nicodemus and Weber all connected once from long range.

Carroll matched the Wildcats point-for-point, led by Chandler White and 10 of his team-high 16 points.

As the first half ended with a three-point differential, so did the third, with Whitko leading 36-33.

Having gone to the foul line only twice the entire game, the Wildcats visited the stripe 11 times in the fourth quarter.

Logan Irwin was 4-for-6 to go along with his two baskets, scoring half of his game–leading 16 in the final period. Sims added four points in the quarter and Nicodemus chipped in two, part of their seven and eight points overall, respectively.

The Chargers finished with 15 points in the period, not enough to catch the Wildcats’ overall output. The final on the scoreboard read 53-48.

Also scoring for Whitko was Kolten Krull (4) and Alex Stoddard (3).
The Wildcats move to one game under .500 at 7-8 and will host North Miami Friday.
