WHY 'BUSCO?: Sheriff’s Dept. weighs in on dogfighting bust

January 5, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday’s dog-fighting bust has left many local residents asking the same question, “Why did those people come to Churubusco?”

Most of the 18 people arrested weren’t from Whitley County. In fact, 13 were from out of state. Most of the arrested came from the Gary-Chicago area, along with several from Michigan.

Brice said typically, dog-fighting rings publish underground magazines, e-mail and text message each other to get the word out about what they call a “dog show.” Saturday night’s show just happened to be hosted in Churubusco.

Brice said a number of those arrested in Churubusco had previous convictions of dog-fighting charges. The Whitley County Sheriff’s Department caught wind of the event through a tip Saturday morning.
A search warrant was obtained, and police began surveillance on Eddie Smith’s home at 906 E. Ind. 205.

Police found more than 10 people standing in the driveway, with upwards of eight vehicles. The Indiana State Police’s emergency response team assisted local police as they raided the home, and all 18 people were arrested on the scene.

According to a case report, officers found a dog-fighting “pit” with an injured dog that was bloodied and lying down inside.

Upon searching a vehicle outside, a “Dogs for Dummies” book was found, as well as several different drug-related items. In total, $8,293.22 was found, along with 13 smart phones and 17 phones total.

The three dogs are being held at the Whitley County Humane Shelter, and the shelter has received many donations from local residents for the abused animals. According to the humane shelter, as of noon Friday they received $1,200 in donations — specifically for the dogs from the case.
