COLUMBIA CITY — Turning short-term goals in to life-long ambition is the mission behind the Whitley County YMCA’s Whitley Weighs-In program.
Now in its seventh year, YMCA Executive Director Erica Miller is hoping to overhaul the health and well being of people in Whitley County with the weight loss challenge.
This year, instead of being a six month competition, the teams of four will be working on weight loss from Jan. 24 to April 25. The team with the highest percentage of weight lost will receive $500, second place team will be given $250 and the third place team will be awarded $100. All members from the top three teams will receive a three-month membership the Whitley County YMCA.
Another addition to the Whitley Weighs In program are the monthly challenges that are designed to promote healthy habits.
The monthly challenges will encourage participants to track water intake, journal food eaten and write down personal activity.
Two levels of participation round off the changes for this year. Level I entrants will pay a $10 per person entry fee. These participants will be entitled to monthly weigh-ins and a weekly e-mail tips.
Level II participants will receive wellness consultations at the YMCA, four YMCA personal training sessions as a team and a weekly pass to the YMCA for the duration of the challenge. The cost is $50 per person.
Weigh-ins are scheduled on the fourth Thursday of each month during the contest. Participants can weigh in at the Whitley County Family YMCA between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. or 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. in the Community Room or at Parkview Whitley Hospital between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the Lower Level.
Any additional missed weigh ins will result in disqualification of the entire team. The team with the highest percentage of weight lost will receive $500. The second place team will be given $250. The third place team will be awarded $100. All members from the top three teams will receive a three-month membership the Whitley County YMCA.
