SOUTH WHITLEY — When two athletic and quick teams meet, one might expect a clean, fast ballgame. Thursday night’s Whitko girls basketball game with the visiting West Noble Lady Chargers showed that something very different is also a possibility. The Chargers’ and Wildcats’ pressure defense forced a combined 59 turnovers and went to the free-throw line for 77 attempts on the game. With less than a second left, the Lady Wildcats got a rebound basket at the buzzer to pull out a stirring 64-62 home win giving them their best start to a season since the early nineties. The Lady Wildcats started strong taking early leads of 12-3 on turnover baskets by Brianna Cumberland and a 3-pointer from the corner by Aly Reiff. The Lady Chargers countered by working the ball inside, getting five points from Becca Schemerhorn and three from 6-foot center Kaylie Warble. Cumberland’s nine points led the Wildcats to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. To read the rest of this story, see the December 20 issue of The Post and Mail. Don't have a subscription?
