GAS CITY — The wait is over.
Whitko’s girls basketball team was in suspense, waiting find out who it would play in Friday’s sectional semifinal. The answer is in — Heritage.
The Lady Wildcats drew the bye in Class 3A, Sectional 23 at Mississinewa. That meant Whitko had to wait on the winner of Heritage and Bellmont, who played Tuesday. Heritage scored a 61-49 triumph.
Whitko coach Brandon Bradley said before Tuesday’s contest, his team planned to go watch the Bellmont/Heritage tilt. No matter who won, he knew his team would have a challenge Friday. He was also confident that his team would be ready.
“We’ve been tested,” he said. “Our record isn’t indicative of who we are.”
The Lady Wildcats record is 7-13. Heritage carries a 13-8 mark for the year.
“We have played some close games and had match-ups against tough teams,” Bradley said.
Among the close games included is a 53-45 defeat Whitko suffered to Warsaw on Nov. 23. The Lady Tigers ended the year ranked eighth in Class 4A with a 19-1 regular season record. The Lady Wildcats also fell to Norwell, but by a closer score than the defeat suffered in 2011-12.
Bradley also believes his team could be coming together at the right time.
The Lady Wildcats tip off with Heritage at 7:30 p.m. Friday, following the semifinal between Norwell and Eastbrook, which tips at 6 p.m.
