SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls basketball team was one week removed from a big conference win, but failed to make it two in a row by falling to Wabash Saturday.
The Lady Wildcats lost to the Lady Apaches by a final score of 47-35. The defeat drops Whitko to 6-13 for the year. Wabash is now 13-6. The Lady Wildcats wrap up the Three Rivers Conference slate with a mark of 2-5 for the campaign. The Lady Apaches ended with a record of 6-1 in the loop.
The Lady Wildcats started the fourth on fire. Sophomore Maddie Gawthorp got a pair of steals and three points in the first minute of the period, and a 3-pointer from freshman Jennifer Reiff and a basket from Josie Sparks reduced the margin to single digits.
However, Whitko was soon left with little time and began fouling Wabash. The Lady Apaches were able to hit enough of their free throws to put the contest out of reach and bring the game to its final margin.
After Melanie Kelsey, the next leading scorers for Whitko were Maddie Gawthorp and Jordan Hall, who had seven each. Claire Cromer of Wabash was the top point-getter for the entire game with 20, including a perfect 7-7 performance at the charity stripe.
Whitko will close the season on Thursday by welcoming Lakeland Christian Academy. Wabash ends the year by hosting Maconaquah.
