CHURUBUSCO — Following an emotional loss to Columbia City Friday night, Whitko’s girls basketball team responded with a win against the county’s other Lady Eagles, Churubusco.
“It’s tough to play two county rivals back-to-back like that,” Whitko Head Coach Brandon Bradley said. “There’s always a fear of a let down after last (Friday) night’s loss.”
The Lady Wildcats traveled to ’Busco Saturday and won 56-37.
Olinske had 17 points — and Bradley is happy with her progress.
“We’ve been working on making her a more complete shooter; not just a set shooter,” Bradley said. “She’s doing a great job adjusting.”
Bradley said the team as a whole is doing a good job adjusting to new offensive and defensive schemes.
“They’re still learning a lot. We have a whole new system,” Bradley said.
Lady Eagle Savannah LaBenz scored three of her six points in the fourth quarter, but the rally wasn’t enough to beat the Lady Wildcats, with the score settling at 56-37.
’Busco’s Coach Perlich gave Whitko’s defense credit for their efforts.
“Their defense took us out of the game. They’re athletic, they’re scrappy and they’re quick,” Perlich said. “We couldn’t get the ball where we needed it to go.”
After an emotional loss to Columbia City the night before, Bradley was proud of the team’s effort.
“They played very well with all things considered,” Bradley said. “Not once in all three of our games have I doubted the team’s effort. I haven’t seen anybody not working hard.”
Bradley said the team is looking forward to taking some time to relax before hosting Elkhart Memorial Saturday.
Churubusco will travel to Lakeland Christian Tuesday.
