SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s girls basketball seniors took the court for the last time at home Wednesday night against Triton. Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats didn’t walk away with a victory, falling to the Lady Trojans, 55-45.
Whitko’s six seniors — Karissa Olinske, Micaela Sylvester, Katee Reiff, Lynsi Hicks, Cassie Jones and Megan Zumbrun — combined for 36 of the Lady ’Cats’ 45 points.
Sylvester, Reiff and Jones are all four-year varsity letter winners and Olinske has three years of experience.
The seniors scored 11 of the Lady ’Cats 14 first-quarter points, giving Whitko a 14-10 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.
The Lady Wildcats only hit one field goal in the second quarter, allowing Triton to take a one-point lead at halftime. With a 21-20 deficit heading into the second half, Whitko’s defense gave up 17 points to the Lady Trojans in the third quarter, while only scoring 10 of their own.
Triton also scored 17 in the fourth quarter, with 17 points from free throws in a foul-filled finish.
“It was hard to get an offense going with all the fouls,” Bradley said.
“We spent a lot of time with the clock stopped, watching them shoot free throws.”
The Lady Trojans shot 41 free throws total but only connected with 24 of them, while Whitko only had 19 opportunities from the charity stripe and shot 73 percent.
Olinske led Whitko with 14 points, followed by Sylvester with eight.
Reiff added seven points while Hicks Josie Sparks had five a piece. Bailee Juillerat chipped in four points and Jones wrapped up scoring with two.
The Lady Wildcats are preparing for sectionals next week. Whitko travels to Mississinewa to face the sectional host.
“It’s a nice time to go on a seven-game win streak,” Bradley said.
