SOUTH WHITLEY — The end is better than the beginning.

That statement was certainly true for Whitko’s boys basketball team in the 2012-13 season. The Wildcats, under first-year head coach Scott Wessel, finished with a record of 6-16. However, Whitko ended its season playing its best basketball of the year and was able to avenge an early-season defeat in the sectional tournament.

“We ended the year the way you want to be playing,” Wessel said.
Whitko was 4-4 in the final weeks of the season, claiming close wins over conference foes in the process.

The ball started rolling when Whitko put away Wabash Jan. 25 by a score of 76-74. The Wildcats followed with another Three Rivers Conference victory over North Miami Feb. 1. Whitko then closed the conference slate with its third win in a row over Manchester.
