Verlin E. âBuckâ Gamble, 76, of Whitely County, passed away at his home at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.
Born April 28, 1937, in Whitley County, he was the son of Omer E. and Opal (Edgington) Gamble.
Buck was a lifetime resident of Whitley County. He graduated from Washington Township School with the Class of 1955.
On Nov. 24, 1956, he married Delores Ilene Alexander in Columbia City. He worked at Anderson Shroyer in Columbia City before working 25 years as a UPS delivery driver, retiring in 1992.
He loved playing and watching baseball and basketball and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana Hoosiers fan. He also held season tickets to Columbia City High School basketball games for 59 years, missing only a handful of games. Buck coached Little League baseball and had championship teams for several years in the 1960s.
He is survived by his son, Rick (Bonnie) Gamble of Manchester, Tenn.; daughter, Candy Bower of Columbia City; four grandchildren; Andrew Gamble of Southaven, Miss., Vanessa Hayes of Manchester, Tenn., Melissa Gamble of Manchester, TN and Libby Bower of Columbia City; two great-grandchildren, twins Aidan and Ethan Hayes of Manchester, Tenn.; brothers, Duane (Edna) and Paul; sister-in-law, Gladys; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 35 years; sister, Waneta Hesting; brothers, Gerald, Doyle and Dale Gamble; and son-in-law, Keith Bower.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Priest officiating. Burial will follow at St. Matthewâs Cemetery.
