UNEXPECTED DONATION: Gold coin could be worth $1,600

December 21, 2012

SOUTH WHITLEY — A gold coin was found in the offering plate at South Whitley United Methodist Church. The one-ounce Krugerrand coin was given to the church by an anonymous donor Sunday.

Rob Barton is the pastor of the 200-plus congregation. He said his inquiry into the coin’s value showed it to be worth anywhere from $1,500 to $1,600.

Giving during the holiday season is encouraged by all kinds of nonprofit organizations wanting to reach out to those in need, but the church has never seen a donation quite like this.
