TRADING SPACES: County turns property over to state

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to turn a fish hatchery property back over to the state of Indiana Monday.

The commissioners also discussed the Camp Samaritan property, which had been in the county’s control since 2010. Camp Whitley was interested in purchasing the land. The stipulation of the contract was if the county did nothing to make Camp Samaritan into a public park, then it would revert back to the DNR.

Questions behind this were related to a pier at Camp Samaritan. It was taken in August of 2012, but by that point, the property would have automatically reverted back to the state’s control.

“We have no liability then,” said Commissioner Chairman George Schumpf.

It is possible the Commissioners will have to sign a quick-claim to deed Camp Samaritan back to the state before it can go to Camp Whitley.
