Track sectional action begins

Whitko’s Kaitlyn Reed placed second in high jump for the Lady Wildcats Tuesday at New Haven’s sectional.

The road to the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Track and Field Finals began Tuesday night as girls’ teams from Whitko and Columbia City traveled to New Haven for sectional competition.

Both teams rose to the occasion, with top four finishes guaranteeing advancement to next week’s Northrop track regional, the Wildcats qualified in six individual events while Columbia City qualified in three individual events and all three of their relay teams.

Homestead claimed the team competition with Whitko taking fifth out of the 11 competing teams with 53 points and Columbia City coming in sixth with 51.5 points.

The Lady Wildcats used strength in the field events and the sprints to accumulate their points.

Elaine Warner led the Lady Wildcats with a school record leap of 17 feet, 2.5 inches to take second in the in the long jump.

Warner’s jump was only ¾ of an inch behind the winning jump of Bellmont’s Holly Hankenson.
