Top 10 bout: No. 1 Peru rallies on No. 9 Whitko in OT

   The boys’ basketball championship game in the Miami County Tournament Thursday put two top 10 teams in class 3A head-to-head. Held at North Miami High School, No. 9 Whitko (7-2) and No. 1 Peru (8-0) squared off with Whitko holding a lead for much of the first half in large part to the game’s leading scorer Logan Irwin, left. The junior standout scored Whitko’s first 10 points of the game. His 18 first half points took the Wildcats into the locker room up 30-25. Whitko’s lead grew to as much as eight points late in the fourth quarter 55-47. However, a shot from Taylor Smith send the game to overtime tied 57-57. From there Irwin’s 34 points for the game helped tied the game 63-63. Ten seconds remaining, Peru got a three-pointer from Travis Smith to keep Peru undefeated 68-63.
