TAX INCREASE: County raises Cumulative Capital rate

May 14, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s County Council voted unanimously to raise the Cumulative Capital tax rate for next year.

Currently, the rate is 1.62 cents. The council approved raising the rate to three cents. With the increase, approximately $400,814 will be raised in property tax revenue. A large portion of the funds are set for bridge repair.

During discussion, Councilman Bill Overdeer discussed using an incremental increase over a period of years. However, immediate needs within the county’s facilities motivated the one-time increase.

“We’ve got the jail and other buildings — where the cost of maintaining them is big,” said Councilman John Barrett.
