COLUMBIA CITY — A popular hobby around the country has taken track locally in Columbia City.
Slot car racing has been happening at AllPro Raceway, which is adjacent to AllPro Towing on Fridays for almost six years. Jeff Hull works at AllPro Towing during the day and helps run the racing league in the evenings.
Hull said competition is open to the public, and the season, which runs from November to April, is set to begin soon.
Slot car racing, specifically, is the hobby of racing powered miniature vehicles, usually mimicking actual race cars, which are guided by grooves or slots in the track on which they run. Approximately 30 competitors participate in each race.
“We have 25 to 35 entries run in different classes,” Hull said.
Hull said the local group is on a much smaller scale than some others. Since there is not an entire room available — that cuts down on the number of participants possible per race.
