SQUIRREL KILLS PHONES: Burned pole leaves 6,000 without service

CHURUBUSCO — A squirrel may have been the culprit in a 6,000-customer phone outage that stretched from Churubusco to Huntertown.

“We think a squirrel chewed the power line, shorted it out and caused our phone line to get burned,” Frontier’s Construction Manager Laura Gay said.

Starting at approximately 1 p.m. Thursday, ’Busco residents were unable to make phone calls — but most importantly, weren’t able to call 911 in the event of an emergency.

According to Gay, workers fixed the 911 section as soon as possible, and it was back up and running at approximately 7 p.m.

AT&T users may have also had an outage, as the same company provides phone service to cell towers in Churubusco.

Some ’Busco residents also lost power due to the faulty pole, as Frontier shares it with American Electric Power (AEP). Gay said all systems were fixed by 9:30 p.m.
