Spring sports ready for tourney time

May 14, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Area sports teams are preparing for conference and sectional play in the upcoming weeks.

While many seasons have felt to have been cut short due to a late start from poor weather conditions in March and April, there have been few cancellations in the last two weeks — readying teams for post-season action.

Tracksters are the first to begin sectional action, as the girls squads compete tonight and boys are scheduled to run Thursday, weather permitting.

Columbia City’s and Whitko’s girls go to New Haven, and Churubusco is competing in the Northrop sectional.

In boys track, Whitko and Columbia City are at Wayne Thursday, while Churubusco competes at Fort Wayne North Side.

Whitko baseball pitcher Wyatt Wolf is now 6-0 on the season, including a win over county-rival Columbia City last week.

Columbia City’s baseball squad suffered its first Northeast Hoosier Conference loss last week against Carroll, falling by one run to the Chargers.

The baseball tourney begins May 22, and the sectional draw was this morning.

Softball sectional play starts May 20. Columbia City takes on Carroll in the first round, Whitko has Bellmont and Churubusco faces Bishop Luers.

In tennis, Columbia City’s Celine Rongos suffered her first loss last week in No. 1 singles to Carroll.

Rongos recovered, winning two matches Saturday, and is expected to fair well in sectional play this week at Warsaw.

Whitko is also slated to play at Warsaw, and Churubsuco travels to Carroll.

Columbia City’s golf team is on the upswing, as the Eagles posted their lowest score in the last nine years.

Columbia City’s linksters scored a 148 last week against New Haven, five strokes off the Eagles’ best score of the century, a 143 in 2004.

Tyler Green shot a 73 in the 18-hole round for the Leo Invitational Saturday, as the first Columbia City medalist in the event since 2004 (Tyler Gay).

The Eagles have the Northeast Hoosier Conference match Saturday.

Whitko’s boys golf team captured the Three Rivers Conference title Saturday.

Golf sectionals are May 31, and all three Whitley County Schools will compete at Stonehenge.
