Snow creates difficult road conditions

December 26, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — A white day-after-Christmas created difficult road conditions across Whitley County Thursday.

A light dusting of snow hit the area after midnight. While accumulation was minimal, it was enough to make several of the county’s roads, particularly U.S. 30, dangerous for drivers.

Julie Smith of the Whitley County Sheriff dispatch center said several calls came in of drivers having slide-offs.

“People were driving too fast for the road conditions,” she said. “U.S. 30 was really bad.”

Many of those phone calls came in early Thursday morning.

“Several drivers went through the median,” Smith said.

Thursday morning’s early snow measured approximately .001 inch at the Fort Wayne International Airport, and was the only snow received over the past three days.

While Thursday’s precipitation might have caught some residents off-guard, it is forecasted to be possibly the last of the week.

Currently, no snow is expected late Thursday night, Friday or Saturday.

The National Weather Service predicts a 30 percent chance of snow Sunday.
