FORT WAYNE — Columbia City swim senior Cole Smith won the 50-yard freestyle race Saturday, meriting a spot on the Northeast Hoosier Conference 1st team.

Smith finished with a 22:23 time, .12 seconds faster than his nearest opponent, from Bellmont.

Fellow boys teammate Tucker Daniel was also recognized by the NHC Saturday, making the Honorable Mention All-NHC team. Daniel placed eighth in both the 200 and 500-yard free events. He also competed with the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, which both placed fourth.

Diver John Davis came in sixth in the two-day meet which started Thursday. Foster Eber finished ninth in the 100-yard butterfly. Jared Mertz took eighth and Devin Moore came in 10th in the 100-yard backstroke.

Overall, Columbia City’s boys placed fourth out of seven teams.

Homestead and Carroll swept the girls meet, with three Charger and 10 Spartan swimmers filling the first-team roster. The schools nearly swept the second team as well, with only one swimmer from a different school, Bellmont. No Columbia City girls were honored by the NHC and the Lady Eagles placed sixth, beating Norwell by five points.

The girls’ 200-yard medley relay team placed fourth. Libby Bower finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly. The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished sixth and the 500 free relay team wrapped up the meet with a fifth place finish.
