COLUMBIA CITY â A 150-year-old legacy was recognized by the state of Indiana recently.
Henry Hiner purchased the homestead located at 10418 S. Washington Rd. Columbia City in April of 1863.
Fast forward approximately 150 years â the Hiner-Geeting-Ware farm was recognized by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. A Hoosier Homestead Award was presented to Deloris Ware, 83, who currently resides in the family home where she was born.
âMy mom and dad drove the horses for the farm,â Ware said. âIt was survival of the fittest. If you didnât work, you didnât eat.â
At the Indiana State Fair, recognition is paid to those farms that have been in the family for an extended period of time.
Wareâs farm was applauded for the 150 years it remains in the family.
âThis means a lot,â Ware said. âIâm very proud that our family has had this place. It means we have roots here. Our family helped shape this area.â
Ware comes from a heritage that knows its legacy.
