Senior-less ‘Busco comes on late

CHURUBUSCO — Fourteen, 1,057 and 24. What do these numbers mean?

Fourteen is the number of losses Churubusco’s boys basketball team suffered before winning its first game, an agonizing stretch for the Eagles and their fans.

The number 1,057 is the amount of points the 2011-12 Eagles scored. That team went 14-7.

Players on the 2012-13 squad that played with the previous year’s team accounted for 24 out of those 1,057 points. The vast majority of the remaining points were scored by seniors that graduated with the class of 2012, thus they were no longer playing for Churubusco last season.

The latter two numbers make the former much more understandable.

With the exodus of point-production preceding last year, head coach Michael McBride had to look elsewhere for scoring.

This would be difficult, because there were no seniors in the ‘Busco boys basketball program.

“We were fully prepared for the fact that we were going to be incredibly young and very inexperienced,” said McBride. “We knew we’d have a tough road coming out of the gate. Plus, we opened with a really tough early schedule.”

All but two of ‘Busco’s first nine games were against opponents that finished the season with at least 10 wins. Among them were 15-6 West Noble and two 20-4 teams, Columbia City and Westview.

Despite the schedule and the team’s youth, the Eagles showed moxie, even in losses.
