Robert Payne, 79

Robert J. “Bob” Payne, 79, of South Whitley, passed away at 7:57 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Lutheran Hospital. Bob was a veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. He loved yard work, especially mowing the grass and working in the garden. He loved spending time with his family.
He was born Aug. 9, 1933 in Standards, N.Y., a son of Claude and Martha (Teater) Payne. He was united in marriage to Vivian Tanner Nov. 13, 1954, in Festersville, Pa. He is survived by his wife.
Additional surviving relatives include five sons, Tim Payne of Fort Wayne, Bob (Vicki) Payne of Columbia City, Chris (Amy) Payne of Columbia City, David (Liz) Payne of South Whitley and Jeff Payne of South Whitley; two daughters, Bridget (Terry) Smith of Huntington and Yovonda (Sam) Crossgrove of White Pigeon, Mich; a brother, Frank Payne of Tucson, Ariz; three sisters, Mona Coleman of Whitesville, N.Y., Myrtle Kear of Whitesville, N.Y. and Twila Wray of New York; 23 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Creech; three sisters, Rose Weinhauer, Joyce Chambers and Alice Wray and three brothers, Sonny Payne, Phil Payne and Burdett Payne.
