COLUMBIA CITY — Work will progress soon on the Liberty Mills Road project, and the taxpayers of Whitley County will pocket savings.
Michael Barton, director of the County Highway Department, updated the Whitley County Commissioners at Monday’s meeting.
Barton has held discussions with officials in Allen County about the next step for the project. The price tag for Whitley County is approximately $101,000. Previously, over the next three years, the county was going to have to pay in equal installments.
Now, the county will pay $12,000 in the first year, $17,000 for the second year and $72,000 the third. Additionally, Allen County will be paying to repave the road, including portions that cross over into Whitley County. The commissioners thanked Barton for his role in negotiating this portion of the project.
“You have saved the taxpayers a lot of money,” said Commissioner Don Amber.
Liberty Mills Road will be repaved from Bass Road to Ind. 24.
In other business, the commissioners heard an annual report on the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation from Alan Tio, president of the EDC.
They also received a visit from Michael Alyesworth, who is the regional director with IDEM. County Attorney Dan Sigler approved the county’s 911 contract and the contract with the Whitley County Humane Shelter.
