SOUTH WHITLEY — Hundreds of people turned out to sample the Cleveland Township Fire Department’s homemade ice creams and hamburger dinner.

A long line snaked through the station to avoid the sprinkling rain outside.

Free-will donations were accepted in a firefighter’s boot.

“The money goes into general funds,” Fire Department Treasurer Steve Weber said. “We just got a new truck this week, so we could use some equipment for it.”

The annual ice cream social has become a popular event for the South Whitley community.

It has been a community staple for so long that no one present could recall how many years the event has been going on.
