COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City was on fire from the tip-off in Whitley County’s boys basketball season opener against Whitko Wednesday.
The Eagles shot 90 percent in 3-pointers in the opening half en route to a lopsided 69-26 win over their county rivals. Mason Coverstone sparked Columbia City, hitting the first of nine Eagle 3-pointers in the first half.
Teammate and leading scorer Drew Benedict and Coverstone combined for six 3-pointers in five minutes in the first quarter. Benedict shot 7-for-7 from behind the arc in the first half and finished the game with 27 points. Coverstone was the team’s second leading scorer with 14.
Columbia City took a 21-9 lead in the first quarter, and extended it to a 30-point, 44-14 advantage at the half.
Whitko struggled offensively, as the Eagle defense held the ’Cats to single-digit scoring in every quarter of the game.
Coverstone knocked down two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Columbia City to its 69-26 win.
The Eagles are back in action at Warsaw and Whitko hosts Leo, both on Saturday night.
