COLUMBIA CITY — Honoring the past while creating the future.
That is the idea behind much of the educational practices of Northern Heights Elementary School. Jake Hoag, principal of NHES, gave a presentation to the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees (WCCS) Monday about the vision in his building.
To create the future, though, Hoag said it is necessary to improve the present. The school has examined ISTEP scores in English/language arts as well as math. Focusing on what has worked in the past, as well as applying new techniques, should bring gains in those areas. The goal is to have 90 percent of students in 3rd to 5th grade be proficient in both areas by the end of the school year. Being intentional is all part of the plan.
