Pregnant woman receives 8-year sentence

September 21, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City woman received what a judge called “an unusual” sentence Monday in Whitley County Circuit Court.

Rita Elswick, 19, was sentenced to eight years, with four to serve and four on suspended sentence, for dealing in methamphetamine.

What makes her sentence unusual is that Judge James Heuer will not decide where she serves it — at the county jail, at the state prison or on home detention — until March 17, 2014.
