PIERCETON — Whitko Middle School students are taking steps to keep the peace in their school.
The Peacekeepers is a group organized to facilitate conflict resolution between peers has middle schoolers developing listening skills and coping mechanisms to help diffuse potentially aggressive situations.
Led by WMS teachers Mike Hanback and Tara Hosier, students shared with Whitko Community School Corporation’s board members how the group conducts its mission.
“We learn observation strategies and take exam to check our skills,” said Brandon Egolf a two-year member of Peacekeepers and an eighth grader at WMS. “I think anyone would enjoy being a part of this group.”
The group meets a couple of times a week to hone communication and trust skills. Overall, the group works to make WMS a school with a sense of community that is safe and non-threatening.
“We have 47 to 50 students trained to operate in this group,” Hosier said. “They go through some intense days of training to be able to do what they do. I think it gives them a chance to take more ownership in the atmosphere of their school.”
