COLUMBIA CITY — Old Settlers Day celebrates the county’s heritage and highlights the cornerstones that have anchored generations to the area.
In 1904, when Old Settlers Day was initiated, the one-day event was a way to honor the founding folks who made the county their home.
In 2013, the festival continues that tradition with the recognition of the county’s oldest citizen and the citizen who has resided in the county the longest.
Jean (Mosher) Benson, 97, was given the award for the Oldest Citizen for 2013.
She was born and raised in Whitley County and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1933.
Benson was joined by her sister, Annadean Schrader, who said Benson “liked to travel a lot when she was younger.
“She’s been to Alaska and all over the U.S.”
Benson, who was married for 17 years to David, said the honor of being the oldest citizen runs in the family.
