Office: Online voter registrations trickle in

September 2, 2010

Whitley County voter registration clerk Debbie Beers says online registration through the state’s new online service has been slow locally.
“I usually get a couple a day,” Beers said.
Since the service became available July 1, Beers estimated about 50 Whitley County voters have registered for this fall’s general election.
“I think maybe people just aren’t aware that it’s available,” Beers said of the service.
The secretary of state’s office says more than 4,000 Indiana residents have gone online to register to vote or update registration information since the state started offering the online service.
Citizens must have a valid Indiana driver’s license or state-issued ID card to use the online registration form at www.indianavoters.com. Oct. 4 is the deadline for Indiana residents to register to vote in the Nov. 2 general election. Citizens can also register at the county voter registration office, located on the second floor of the courthouse or at local Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices.
While nationally the election may not draw as many voters as during a presidential election year, Beers said she has a feeling there may be bigger interest here due to the race for Congressman Mark Souder’s vacated 3rd District seat.
She said her office has fielded several calls regarding how the special and general elections will be handled.
Beers said the special election, to complete Souder’s term ending Jan. 3, will be placed on the same ballot as the election for the term that will fill the Congressional seat for the term 2011-2013.
“It’s very clear on the ballot what people are voting for,” she said.
The first box on the ballot will indicate that voters are voting for the U.S. Representative for District 3 for a two-year term, 2011-2013. Underneath that is the special election box to fill the remainder of Souder’s current term ending Jan. 3, 2011.
“We did what we thought would be best and easiest for the voters,” Beers said, adding that the state, all the counties in the Third District and Microvote, the county’s electronic voting company, all worked together to come up with the plan.
