NO MURDER: Whitley County without homicide in 2012
COLUMBIA CITY — There were no homicides in Whitley County for the year 2012. There were also no homicides in the county in 2011. However, there were three in a 13-month period between 2009 and 2010. “We averaged one per year, and that is out of the ordinary for Whitley County” Whitley County Sheriff Chief Deputy Marc Gatton said. “Normally we don’t have any.”That has been reflected in having zero homicides in the past two years — which is a return to what law enforcment might expect compared to the 13 months before that. “In 13 months we had three. That is a lot — more than what we are used to,” Gatton said. While there were no murders locally in 2012, there were more around the region in the county neighbors of Whitley County. There was one murder in neighboring Kosciusko County, when a Leesburg man killed his ex-wife. The man took his own life hours after the slaying. There were 30 murders in Allen County in the past year. Twenty-seven of those were in the city of Fort Wayne. Currently 17 of those murders remain unsolved, but investigators are optimistic that with time, charges can be brought against suspects in those cases. For a more in-depth look at this story, see the Jan. 7 issue of The Post and Mail.
