NEW VEHICLES: Board of works approves purchases

COLUMBIA CITY — New vehicles for the city were approved for purchase by the Columbia City Board of Works and Safety Tuesday.

The board approved the purchase of a Ford Escape for the electric department at $23,620.29; a new dump truck for the electric department at $34,069.21; a Ford F550 for the water department, which will be $36,679.46 and a new vehicle for the street department, which will cost $31,542. All costs include trade-in from previous vehicles where applicable.

While the city is purchasing several new vehicles at once, Mayor Ryan Daniel commended the departments for their thriftiness.

“You guys do a good job of keeping your vehicles up,” he said, noting the old dump truck from the electric department, for instance, is 16 years old.

In other business, the board approved waiving sewer tap fees for Habitat For Humanity and its group of homes in Ravenwood. Currently Habitat owns four properties with an option to possibly purchase five more.

The board also approved a recommendation to the city council to have the city pay drainage assessment fees on behalf of property owners.

Mark Green of Columbia City’s Park Board also reported baseball sign-up will conclude this Saturday and softball sign-up will end in March.

The next meeting of the board of works will be Tuesday, March 12.
