CHURUBUSCO â Smith-Green Community Schools has selected a new superintendent.
An official announcement will be made Monday at 7 p.m. at the SGCS Administrative Center. Board of Trustees for SGCS will officially agree on the candidate and approve the person for hire Monday. The meeting is open to the public.
The district has been operating with an interim superintendent, Ralph Bailey, for the past six months. Bailey will conclude his time with SGCS Jan. 18. A reception has been planned in his honor for Jan. 18 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria annex at Churubusco Junior-Senior High School.
Monday, SGCS Business Manager Todd Fleetwood gave an update regarding the schoolâs construction project at the regular board meeting.
Among other projects, Fleetwood addressed questions about the renovation of the auditorium. Asbestos that has been in the auditorium ceiling for 30 years is going to be removed. The auditorium will be rendered unusable while the asbestos is being removed.
Of particular concern to administrators are two events involving New Era, the high school show choir.
âAfter the New Era Invitational, the auditorium will be closed until May," said CJSHS Principal Jim Folland. "Weâre hoping to open it again in mid-May because New Era puts on âSpectravaganzaâ at that time. If we canât get back into the auditorium by then, we have a back up plan to use the main gym.â
As for the rest of the construction project, Fleetwood said the interior walls of the new cafeteria have gone up. Plans have been made to buy new tables for the cafeteria. New security cameras are also in the works to improve security at the schools, particularly in the parking lot and at the bus garage.
Security at the bus garage has been of particular concern since catalytic converters were stolen off four buses Dec. 17, 2012.
