NECC championship slips from ’Busco

LAGRANGE — Conventional football wisdom says a team should go for the win on the road, and for the tie at home.

The visiting Churubusco Eagles put that philosophy to practice, losing a one-point game to Lakeland, 14-13, after a failed two-point conversion attempt with under two minutes to play.

It was the final regular season game for both squads, and both end with a 7-2 mark going into sectionals. However, the defeat was the second in the conference for ’Busco, costing the Eagles a chance to share the Northeast Corner Conference title with Fairfield.

Instead, it was the host-Lakers who clinched a tie for the NECC crown, ending with a 7-1 league record.
