Monk earns state runner up

June 9, 2014

BLOOMINGTON — Whitley County’s stand-out athletes took the track Friday and Saturday for the Indiana State Track meet at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Out of Whitley County’s three schools, Churubusco’s tracksters were the lone local athletes to compete at the state level.
Katie Monk competed in two events, earning state runner up in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 7 inches, and taking 26th in shot put with a toss of 29-9.5.

The winning discus throw came from a Lawrence North athlete at 160 feet, 2 inches.

Teammate Danielle Pippenger came in 21st in long jump, leaping 16 feet, 5.5 inches. Pippenger placed third in the event in regionals with a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches.

Churubusco’s boys 1,600-meter relay team of Aaron Zolman, Landon Lillmars, Luke Lillmars and Chance Gallmeier placed 26th after coming in second in regionals. The team ran six seconds slower than its regional time of 3:24.5, which would have placed 17th at the state level.
