McClure named regional champ

May 24, 2013

FORT WAYNE — Churubusco’s Austin McClure was the regional champion Thursday night at Wayne High School.

McClure heaved the shot put 51 feet, 9 inches to garner the title and earn his ticket to the state track meet May 31 in Bloomington.

McClure is the lone Whitley County boys trackster to head to state — along with four girls — including fellow ’Busco thrower Katie Monk.
Monk is advancing in the discus.

McClure also competed in the discus, placing 13th with a throw of 120 feet, 2 inches.

Whitko’s Tyler Sherwin was also in the discus. Sherwin took eighth place at 138-03. The state-qualifying distance was 166 feet, 11 inches.

“Sherwin surprised us by throwing a career best and advancing to the finals,” Whitko Head Coach Ron Cherry said.
