Mary G. â€śJerryâ€ť Rothgeb, 91, of Columbia City, died at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Parkview Oaks where she had been a resident since April 23.
She was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Rockville, N.Y. a daughter of Orville Adelbert and Frances Pearl (Jerolds) Robinson. As a young girl, her family moved to California for nine years, returning to New York and later Texas. In 1937, they moved to Fort Wayne where she graduated from Central High School.
On Jan. 26, 1946, she was united in marriage to Jay L. Rothgeb. They made their home in Fort Wayne until the mid-1950s when they moved to Shriner Lake. In 1963, they moved to a farm in Thorncreek Township and in October 1975 to their home in Stable Acres, Jefferson Township. In October 1996, they moved into Columbia City. Mr. Rothgeb died Aug. 31, 2001.
She was a telephone operator for Indiana Bell for eight years. She also worked for I.T.T., Ken-Dek, Precision Plastics and Alcoils. She retired from Bond Flex.
Her memberships included Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 98 Auxiliary, V.F.W. Post 5582 Auxiliary, AARP, Whitley County YMCA and Old Bats in Red Hats. She volunteered at Parkview Whitley Hospital for many years.
Surviving relatives include three children, Byron â€śBudâ€ť (Karen) Rothgeb, Kay F. Cowdin and Patty A. Elliott, all of Columbia City; a daughter-in-law, Caryl Parks of Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David L. Rothgeb; a brother, Adelbert Robinson and two sisters, Etta Anderson and Evelyn Marsh.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 204 N. Main St., Columbia City, with visitation after 9 a.m. Monday at the church. The burial will be in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne. The visitation will also be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
